The novelist and journalist Susie Steiner tragically died recently from a brain tumour at the age of 51. She is best known for her debut Homecoming, a Yorkshire-set family saga, as well as her DS Bradshaw detective series which included Missing, Presumed, Persons Unknown and Remain Silent.

A couple of years ago she recorded this moving piece for Open Book about the comfort, joy and honesty reading brought her during her illness, making an impassioned call to authors to write candidly about such universally important experiences.
