Longing to Belong
Lorraine, a Jamaican teenager, has recently arrived in 1960s Bristol. Facing hostility and prejudice, she sings passionately about her need to connect with people in her new home.
It is 1963 and Lorraine, a Jamaican teenager, has recently arrived in Bristol. She soon realises that her new home is not the warm, welcoming place she hoped it would be. In the face of hostility and prejudice, she sings passionately about her desire to belong.
Longing to Belong is adapted from stage musical To The Streets!, a Birmingham 2022 Festival commission, which tells the story of the Bristol Bus Boycott - a group of West Indian migrants organised a city-wide boycott of the bus company in protest at its racist employment policies. Their victory was a catalyst for the 1965 Race Relations Act.
Lorraine joins the fight, finds her voice and becomes part of a movement that changed history.
