‘If you can’t be who you are, your mental health really suffers. It’s a tale as old as time’

Self Esteem’s music tackles the patriarchy, sexual abuse and toxic relationships, and it’s all put to an irresistible danceable beat.

The woman behind the Self Esteem stage name, Rebecca Lucy Taylor, is 35, from Rotherham and is nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize for her second album, Prioritise Pleasure.

She spoke to Emma Barnett on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour about finding her true self and how it’s influenced her music, why you need to be uncomfortable in life, and what it was like wearing a VERY high cut leotard for her album cover.
