The deadly impact of the oil giants鈥� toxic air pollution on children and the planet is revealed in this 大象传媒 News Arabic investigation from the frontline of climate change in Iraq.

Scientific tests carried out for the 大象传媒 indicate high levels of harmful and carcinogenic chemicals released in communities near oil fields that flare gas 24 hours per day. Gas flaring is the poisonous practice of burning excess gas during oil production.

The investigation exposes how major oil companies including British oil company BP are using a loophole to avoid reporting their methane and CO2 emissions from flaring in Iraq. The Iraqi government and oil companies made commitments to wipe out methane emissions from flaring and it is likely to be a priority at COP27. But the 大象传媒 has evidence that - despite a Shell-backed anti-flaring project 鈥� the problem has hugely increased in Iraq alongside oil production, fuelling climate change.

Against a global backdrop of crippling inflation, will oil companies do more to capture and sell the gas they鈥檙e burning off?

The Oil Minister of Iraq told the 大象传媒 he would investigate the findings and hold BP responsible for managing any problems related to environmental standards. BP have said they are 鈥渆xtremely concerned by the issues raised by the 大象传媒鈥� and added that they do not declare the gas flaring emissions from Rumaila oil field because they are lead contractors, rather than operators of the field and are not obligated to report those emissions.
