Witch Charn Monaidh
When wise woman Mary Butters is called to remove bewitchment from the family cow, three people end up dead. Was it a mistaken use of popular magic, or something more sinister?
Scéal Mary Butters, bhà cáil ar Butters i measc a pobail mar gheall gur chleacht sà draÃocht na ndaoine. Iarradh uirthi bó a shaoradh ó dhiamhracht agus nà raibh sé i bhfad ina dhiaidh sin go bhfuair triúir bás tobann. An asarlaÃocht a bhà ann, nó timpiste, nó an ndearnadh d'aon turas é? Bhà deireadh ag teacht leis na géarleanúintà san Eoraip faoi tráth seo agus rinne an eaglais agus an uasaicme beag is fiú d'eolas osnádúrtha na mná ag déanamh amach nach raibh ann ach piseoga seafóideacha. Ach chreid na daoine go láidir sna piseoga seo go fóill.
It's 1807 County Antrim, and a multiple murder takes place in the small village of Carnmoney. Local ‘wise woman’ Mary Butters - aka the Carnmoney Witch - was called to the home of Elizabeth Montgomery to remove bewitchment from the family cow. Mary Butters uses a series of spells and incantations to fight against the ‘milk witch’. The house is sealed, sulphur is burnt and, in the morning, three members of the family are found dead, in what the jury ruled was a mistaken use of sulphur. Mary Butters was found not guilty, but on the grounds of 'female ignorance' rather than evidence.
