SNP MSPs should have been free to vote how they wanted on the gender recognition reform bill, said Ash Regan who resigned over the issue last week.

She told media gathered at Holyrood that her conscience would not allow her to back the legislation which would make it easier to legally change gender.

Ms Regan said she was not 100% certain the Gender Recognition Reform Bill would not put women and girls in danger. The Scottish government insisted the legislation would not reduce women's rights. Nine SNP MSPs refused to vote for the legislation in the biggest rebellion at Holyrood since the party took power.
