The cellist Yo-Yo Ma dreamed of a global music never heard before. To spark the Silk Road Project, he first had to find other musicians who saw his vision too.

The Silk Road Project was an impossibly ambitious, creatively expansive idea to not only create a category of music that had never been heard before, but also create ensembles to perform it, and audiences who were hungry to hear it. How did Yo-Yo Ma build this vision? He knew from the beginning that it wasn鈥檛 about him. You'll hear in the episode from Yo-Yo himself and four key players in the ensemble: clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, percussionist Joseph Gramley, Galician bagpiper Cristina Pato, and pipa player Wu Man.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has won 18 Grammies in the course of a long classical music career that began as a child prodigy. He鈥檚 the founder of Silkroad (where recently passed on the leadership torch to Rhiannon Giddens).
