Refugees are being ‘weaponised’ in the UK
Refugees to the UK are being “weaponised” by the government, a refugee from Afghanistan who arrived to Britain illegally as a teenager and now works as a doctor in the NHS has told ý News.
“They are politicised… they are criminalised,” Dr Waheed Arian told the ý’s Hardtalk programme.
Asked by Stephen Sackur about the UK government’s current immigration policies which could have prevented his own successful asylum claim, Dr Arian said: “We don’t have to go through division, through hatred.”
Instead of being deported, he suggested refugees' skills could be utilised. “We have shortages of staff, people who can work in healthcare, in education, in other sectors.
“On the other hand we are trying to send people away,” he said.
More than 45,000 people made the Channel crossing in 2022 according to the UK government and five people died.
