'Mr Antarctic Volcano' receives Polar Medal for the second time, from a second monarch.
A University of Leicester volcanologist has been awarded the Polar Medal by King Charles III, the second time he has received the accolade. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II also awarded him a Polar Medal in 1986.
The award is for individuals who have given outstanding achievement and service to the UK in the field of polar research. There have been more than 1,000 recipients of the award, but fewer than two dozen have had the honour conferred twice.
Professor John Smellie, known as 'Mr Antartic Volcano' has dedicated his career to volcanoes in Antartica - so much so that he has visited and worked on more volcanoes there than any other person.
Professor Smellie tells Ben Jackson how on his most recent trip to Antarctica he experienced extremely challenging conditions.
