'Policing not on the brink on crisis, it's already there'

Almost one in five police officers plan to quit within two years because of low morale and dissatisfaction over pay.

That's one finding of the annual survey carried out by the Police Federation.

It also shows 85 per cent of police officers in Cheshire feel worse off financially now than they were five years ago.

The Federation says being able to protect the public effectively rests on a knife edge.

It's calling for greater investment in policing and says the government mustn't ignore the needs of the service because officers don't have the right to strike.

Sir Peter Fahy is a former Chief Constable of Cheshire Police.
