4. Life After The Hostel

Hear how the children rebuilt their lives after losing everything

When the war ended and the hostel closed down, the majority of the girls were orphans: scattered around the globe attempting to rebuild their lives. They’d lost their language, their culture and their families.

We find out how the ripple effects of what they’d been through influenced the rest of their lives. Their struggle to come to terms with the loss of their parents at the same time as supporting themselves with little family to fall back on. Then how, after more than half a century, they reunited – first in London and then in the Lake District, having built careers and families of their own, despite everything they’d lost.
