Senior Nigerian politician found guilty in organ-trafficking plot
A senior Nigerian politician, his wife and a doctor have been found guilty of an organ-trafficking plot, after they brought a 21-year-old man to the UK from Lagos.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Dr Obinna Obeta, were convicted of conspiring to exploit the man for his kidney, in the first such case under the UK's modern slavery laws. Senator Ekweremadu is being held in custody pending sentencing in May.
Bamidele Igbinedion, who is the lawyer for the victim in Nigeria, where there have been legal proceedings separate to the UK court case, gave Newsday his reaction to the verdict in the UK courts.
"We are ecstatic... we expect more people like Senator Ekweremadu to be arrested and charged. The political establishment has ignored the health system in Nigeria... for them it's just as easy to pop on a plane and get treatment abroad. This is a message to people like the Senator that they can鈥檛 act with impunity."
