Nashville school shooting: what happens next?

"I expect we will respond to this tragedy with an even greater likelihood of gun violence in Tennessee".

A day after the attack at a school in Nashville in Tennessee left three students and three adult staff members dead, U.S. President Joe Biden condemned what he called a "sick" epidemic of gun violence against children.

It has emerged the Nashville shooter had bought seven guns legally and hid them at home.

Tennessee has some of the most permissive gun laws in the United States, and firearms can be carried openly without the need for a permit.

President Biden has urged Congress to act now to ban assault weapons.

Freddie O'Connell, a local councillor who is running for Mayor in the city, says going forward he "expect[s] worse than nothing here. I honestly expect that we will emerge from this legislative session of the state with further relaxations or worse requirements for guns".

He adds this includes arming teachers - "literally throwing more guns at the problem".
