'Proposals for the new Gartree prison are in the wrong place'
A government decision on whether a new super-prison will be built near Market Harborough will now be made in the middle of May.
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said the facility, close to the existing HMP Gartree, near Lubenham, was needed to cope with increasing inmate numbers.
The decision was due this week but has been delayed while new evidence, submitted by Harborough MP Neil O'Brien, is considered by the government.
People living near the site of the existing prison have campaigned against plans for a new prison - at nearly three times its current size - since the idea first emerged.
Former Prison Officer Des Smith who lives next to the existing Gartree prison tells Ady Dayman why he thinks plans for the new facility are in the wrong place.
