'It's probably the oldest secular building that we have in Leicester'

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Leicester saw a significant development boom.

Several major new buildings appeared inside and outside the town walls, whilst many existing buildings including the castle and the churches were enlarged or rebuilt.

The medieval High Street (now called Highcross Street) was at this time the principal trading street of the town. The remains of what is thought to be a wealthy merchant鈥檚 house were found at the top of the modern Highcross Street under what is now the 大象传媒 Radio Leicester building. It had an undercroft of stone which was probably used for the storage of valuable goods.

Historian Peter Liddle and Ben Jackson went down into the undercroft to discover that it is astonishingly well preserved.
