Sudan: UN pushes for ceasefire extension
Diplomats are stepping up efforts in Sudan to extend a ceasefire between troops loyal to rival generals. They are trying to end an outbreak of violence that has left more than 500 people dead and forced tens of thousands to flee the country.
The 72-hour ceasefire, which was agreed by Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ends on Thursday at midnight local time.
The United Nations envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, told Newsday that he was trying to organise a three-day extension to the current US-brokered truce: 鈥淕eneral al-Burhan has accepted in principle鈥 don鈥檛 think the RSF leadership鈥ould be able to refuse such a call if it is doable logistically.鈥
