How much does St Edward鈥檚 Crown cost?
Consisting of two kilograms of gold and 444 gemstones, the iconic St Edward鈥檚 Crown will play a central role in the coronation of King Charles III, as it has for many of his predecessors.
There has been much speculation as to what the value of the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels really is. Alan Hart, CEO of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, breaks down what it would cost to replicate today.
"First of all I would need 2kg of gold...then I'd need to replicate all the gemstones...there's 444 of them. The major stones, there are 16 of them...tourmalines, quartzes, citrines. garnets, amethysts" he says, adding "Then, there's the velvet... the ermine fur...the silverwork and then I'd need an expert goldsmith, craftsmen, a jeweller to put it all together."
Mr Hart says, "I would need about 拢350,000 to create a replica."
