DR Congo 'facing humanitarian catastrophe' after torrential rain
The authorities in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo say close to 400 people have been killed by floods and landslides that hit two villages, following torrential rain on Thursday.
The Congolese Red Cross volunteers do not have body bags. They are having to pile up the bodies wrapped up in blankets in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi in South Kivu province. And the body count keep rising.
The medical charity Medecine Sans Frontiers sent a team to the remote area to support the local authorities. Newsday heard more from MSF spokesperson Igor Garcia Barbero, speaking from Minova in South Kivu province.
"We are facing a humanitarian catastrophe. There are many people who have lost everything. There are dead bodies that remain under the rubble. This area was already facing crises of a different kind so people are desperately and urgently in need."
