Iran executes three men over anti-government protests
Amnesty International says Iran is responsible for around 65% of the world's executions.
Authorities in Iran have executed three men over anti-government protests.
Saeed Yaghoubi, 37, Saleh Mirhashemi, 36, and Majid Kazemi, 30, were convicted over their alleged involvement in a shooting attack that killed three security personnel in Isfahan in November.
Amnesty International says they were subjected to unfair trials and allegedly tortured. Nina Navid, Amnesty International's Iran lead says: "These three young men were arrested in connection with the protests in November. Their cases were fast-tracked through Iran's judicial system. They were subjected to torture and forced confessions used against them."
"It's really heart-breaking news that three more individuals, protesters, have been subjected to executions just for carrying out their right to freedom of expression and assembly." she says, adding, "Iran is now responsible for approximately 65% of the world's executions...we're very worried between now and summer many more will be at risk."
This comes as a Global Annual Death sentence report that was published this week, indicates Iran carries out the second most executions in the world, second only to China
