Ukraine war: Russia deploys nuclear missiles in Belarus
Belarus has formally agreed to Russia deploying tactical nuclear missiles on its territory. And the Belarusian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has already announced that the transfer of these weapons has started.
Newsday drilled down into what this means for Europe and the conflict in Ukraine with Pavel Latushka, a former Belarusian ambassador who is now a key opposition figure.
"[These nuclear deployments are] in order to threaten to use them or possibly to ensure its use. The goal of Putin and Lukashenko is to de-motivate Western society and discourage further support for Ukraine."
"The West does not understand Lukashenko's role. Lukashenko is not resisting Putin. He wants to do what Putin is telling him to do. Today, Belarus is disappearing before our eyes."
