The UN Security Council has voted to extend for one year the sanctions regime imposed on South Sudan, including asset freezes, travel bans and an arms embargo.

The council resolution drafted by the United States was approved with 10 votes in favour and five members abstaining.

The countries that abstained were China, Russia, Ghana, Gabon and Mozambique. The three African countries said the sanctions were counterproductive and did not reflect progress they said South Sudan had made.

Deng Dau Deng Malek is South Sudan鈥檚 Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. He told Newsday the ongoing sanctions are 鈥渘ot necessary. It is counterproductive and it will have an adverse effect on the very citizens that the US, France and the UK claims to support and protect.鈥�
