Are Africa鈥檚 rural nurses valued enough?
Africa Daily speaks to Agnes Nambozo, who was filmed climbing a rickety ladder to treat people in a remote village. Uganda鈥檚 health minister called her 鈥榥urse of the year鈥�.

This week Africa Daily has been looking at what it means to be a nurse in Africa. We鈥檝e heard from those who want to leave to find work 鈥� but have been banned from working abroad by their governments. We鈥檝e also heard from those who鈥檝e left the continent with high hopes 鈥� only for some to fall prey to unscrupulous agencies who take a cut of their wages.
But today we鈥檙e looking at what life is like for those still working in Africa 鈥� concentrating on the story of Agnes Nambozo, the nurse captured on video clambering up a rickety wooden ladder attached to the side of a mountain in order to conduct health and vaccination programmes for villagers who couldn鈥檛 otherwise access them.
The video led Uganda鈥檚 health minister to label her 鈥渘urse of the year鈥�. But many questioned why the minister wasn't rewarding nurses like Agnes - and making their working conditions safer.
