The real death toll is likely to be higher. Many of the health and government offices that would track fatalities in Khartoum, where fighting has been heaviest, have ceased to function.
Sudan, with a population of about 49 million, is among the poorest countries in the world. The fighting has destroyed its already stretched healthcare and other infrastructure, including hospitals and airports.
Mary Louise Eagleton is UNICEF Sudan鈥檚 deputy representative. She told Newsday: 鈥淚t鈥檚 really horrific. Children have been caught amidst the fighting鈥cross the country and these children in the orphanage are really the most, most vulnerable.鈥
