Police in Hong Kong have detained several pro-democracy activists on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
Authorities have banned public commemoration of the 1989 incident, which saw China crush peaceful protests in Beijing with tanks and troops.
Elaine Yu, a newspaper journalist based in Hong Kong told Newsday that restrictions this year have been tougher than in previous years.
She added that those arrested on the streets were people 鈥渨ho wore shirts that maybe had texts or graphics, that held small candles or flowers or performance artists... seemingly small acts that had been tolerated in Hong Kong for decades.鈥
There was a "very heavy police presence" and some people tried to go Victoria Park to commemorate victims as they would in the past but were stopped by police officers. The political atmosphere she said "has become more strict and security measures are here to stay."
