9/11 Families: PGA-LIV merger is ‘sportswashing’

The PGA Tour has agreed to merge with rival LIV Golf, which is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund.

A coalition of people who survived the September 11 attacks and family members of victims have denounced the surprise merger of Saudi-backed LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

9/11 Families United has accused the PGA Tour of taking “sportswashing” money from Saudi Arabia, a country many victims blame for aiding the September 11 terrorist attacks — an allegation Saudi officials deny.

The 9/11 terror attacks on the United States in 2001 killed almost 3,000 people. According to an FBI declassified document, 15 of the 19 plane hijackers in the attack were Saudi nationals.

Terry Strada, whose husband Tom was among those killed, is a spokeswoman for 9/11 Families United. She told Newsday: “They’ve created this…golf entity that is nothing more than a sportswashing entity…it’s meant to cleanse their reputation…wash away the blood stains.”
