The West Indian Sitting Room as assembled by many from the Windrush Generation of the 1960 and 70's is so iconic that it has been recreated by many museums.

Identical possessions聽like a glass fish ornament, a radiogram, a display cabinet, a painting of the last supper, a drinks trolley, a pineapple ice bucket and crocheted doilies adoring furniture, could be found in most homes. The sitting room was so precious, at one point or another it was another no-go area for younger members of the family.

Daisey Aymer who came from Jamaica aged 22 and lived in Hackney remembers聽her front room fondly.

Her daughter Denise Roberts told our reporter Valley Fontaine that as a child one of her most important chores was to keep this precious space clean and tidy.
