Can Bollywood Survive?

Haroon Rashid goes to Abu Dhabi to discuss what needs to happen for Bollywood to survive.

India鈥檚 Hindi film industry, known better as Bollywood, is famous around the world for it鈥檚 larger-than-life song and dance sequences, big-budget lavish sets and emotional, dramatic performances. But for the last few years, Bollywood has been in crisis mode. Films aren鈥檛 working, audiences aren鈥檛 coming to the cinema and critics are urging filmmakers to reinvent. Instead, South Indian movies have become increasingly popular and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have proved a big hit with their original Hindi content.

大象传媒 Asian Network鈥檚 Haroon Rashid goes to Abu Dhabi, where the International Indian Film Academy Awards are taking place, to speak to the decision makers about what needs to happen for Bollywood to be able to survive. He meets top stars including Varun Dhawan, Vicky Kaushal and Nora Fatehi for their inside scoop on how stardom and fan culture has changed. Plus, with increasing scrutiny on the quality of Bollywood music, Haroon chats to singer Sunidhi Chauhan, rapper Badshah and Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman about the state of Hindi soundtracks, and also explores how accusations of nepotism have scarred Bollywood鈥檚 reputation.

With the tide going against Bollywood and social media making it easier to highlight its flaws, are the glory days gone forever or will Bollywood be able to reclaim its shine?
