Riot dog: The rebel hound with a cause
In Psirri, one of the oldest districts in Athens, people have been flocking to get their photo taken with a dog. The dog is called Loukanikos. He became the unofficial symbol of mass social protest during the Greek financial crisis that started in the late 2000s
"During the crisis and the protests and the riots he was always there on the frontlines standing in the protesters side, barking at police," explains urban artist Cacao Rocks. "His name was Loukanikos, that means Sausage, but it's the same word that Anarchists were using for Molotov cocktails."
Loukanikos became an online sensation and was even voted 'Person of the Year' by Time magazine. After his demise in 2014, local artists gathered together to create drawings of the stray canine, the best of which were turned into a huge mural.
"Now it became a monument and people from all around the world are coming to visit it and take pictures standing next to it," says Cacao.
