US cluster bombs overshadow Nato meeting

President Joe Biden is in Britain to meet the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to discuss a range of issues, including the war in Ukraine before heading to Lithuania for a summit of the Nato trans-Atlantic military alliance.

Several Nato members have questioned a US decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine.

The move has been criticised by human rights groups as the weapon is banned by more than 100 countries.

Lord Peter Ricketts, who was a former UK permanent representative to Nato, explained the effect on the ground of the controversial munitions.

"The issue is a number of [these bomblets] fail to explode and children can pick them up years later and be maimed. Russians and Ukrainians have been using them in the war so far."
