Sudan: What do we know about war crimes in Darfur?
The International Criminal Court has opened a new investigation into alleged war crimes in the Darfur region of Sudan since mid-April.
Ethnic violence has surged there as part of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, said the reports included attacks on civilians, mass rapes, and the burning of homes and markets.
The announcement came after the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said the remains of 87 people were found in a mass grave outside El Geneina in Sudan鈥檚 West Darfur region.
Seif Magango is a spokesperson for the OHCHR. He told Newsday: 鈥淲e have credible testimony from witnesses鈥ho fled El Geneina鈥hey told us about the specific place where the burial took place.鈥
