Trade union chief warns against protests in Kenya
Francis Atwoli says he has appealed to Raila Odinga who called for demonstrations against tax and price increases.
A further three days of protests are due to begin in Kenya against tax and price increases.
The demonstrations have been called by the opposition led by Raila Odinga. Last week, he cancelled a planned rally in Nairobi at short notice after several protesters were killed. But he warned of further demonstrations unless the government abandoned its tax plans.
Kenya's interior minister, Kithure Kindiki, said national security agencies had been deployed and stern action would be taken against any lawbreakers.
Francis Atwoli is the Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions in Kenya. During campaigning in last year's election he publicly endorsed Raila Odinga 鈥 however he believes the protests will ultimately hurt people. He told Newsday: 鈥淲e are worried now with continued demonstrations. I was part of the Azimio brigade. The leader of the opposition in Kenya is my own relative so I have been trying to reach out to him, telling him that the people who will suffer most are workers, women and children.鈥
