Leicester artist's portrait marks 75th anniversary of the NHS

The portrait is of Grace, a junior doctor who experienced life changing injuries.

A talented artist from Leicester has unveiled a special portrait to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS.

Jemisha Maadhavji created a portrait of Grace - a junior doctor who experienced life changing injuries when a man jumped from the third floor of a shopping centre and landed on her.

Despite sustaining a life-altering spinal cord injury Grace continued her medical studies and is now a practising junior doctor in a busy London A&E department. Grace says that being in a wheelchair brings her closer to eye-level with the hospital beds, making it easier to connect with her patients.

The painting of Grace has been featured on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ tv programme 'Extraordinary Portraits'. 26 year old artist Jemisha is inspired by subjects who don't fit conventional social labels. Known for her vibrant portraits, detailed with carefully curated prints and colours, Jemisha is interested in ‘the outsider’ - an approach that has landed her work in 'Vogue India'.

Jemisha describes the portrait to Rupal Rajani and explains why it was important for her to tell Grace's story through art.
