‘Niger’s coup is a threat to the world’

Niger's ousted leader has urged the US and the "entire international community" to help "restore... constitutional order" after last week's coup.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, President Mohamed Bazoum said he was writing "as a hostage".

Unrest has erupted in the west African state since Mr Bazoum was overthrown.

On Thursday, the coup leaders announced they were withdrawing the country's ambassadors from France, the US, Nigeria and Togo.

Kiari Liman-Tinguiri is Niger's ambassador to the US. He told Newsday that if the government of President Bazoum is not restored “it means the jihadists in the countries where Wagner puts its hold…will have a very big sanctuary…they will have access to the sea and to the north…you open up a route that nobody is controlling. I think it puts all of Europe in danger.â€
