Sudan: Coping in a war zone when your home becomes a refuge
Ahmed is using savings to feed his extended family after they fled their homes in Omdurman, Sudan.
That's the sound of fighting on the streets of Omdurman in Sudan which lies just over the River Nile from the capital, Khartoum. Sudan has been ravaged by internal conflict for almost four months now after brewing tensions spilled over into civil war between the army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Since then the country has been beset by fierce fighting and some four million people have been displaced.
Omdurman which is currently experiencing an upsurge in the violence. At least nine civilians had been killed in Omdurman, according to neighbourhood activists in the east of the city.
A month ago, Newsday heard from Ahmed - a resident of Omdurman - and he's recorded his thoughts for us again as he, his family and his neighbours continue to live amidst the violence.
"Last week we lost three family member including an 11-year-old boy. Thirteen were injured as a result of shelling at their house. Those who survived are now with us including infants and an 83-year-old grandfather."
