Trump criminal charges: ‘No one is above the law’
Democrat Congressman says they are “doing their level best to hold the former president and other people involved accountable”.
Prosecutors in the US state of Georgia have charged Donald Trump with trying to overturn the results of the last presidential election.
The former president is facing 13 counts including racketeering, solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer and conspiracy. A further 18 people, including Mr Trump’s then chief of staff Mark Meadows and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani have also been indicted.
The indictment document says Mr Trump knowingly and willingly joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in Georgia and elsewhere.
Mr Trump has denied wrongdoing and has described the investigation as politically motivated. This is the fourth criminal case to be brought against him since he left office.
US Congressman Adam Smith is a Democrat. He told Newsday: “No-one is above the law…We are doing our level best to hold the former president and other people involved accountable.” However, he recognises growing support for Mr Trump: “The degree to which his criminal behaviour becomes more and more exposed only seems to fire up the Republican party to support him more, which is deeply troubling…I hope they get past the cult of Donald Trump and get back to being a reasonable conservative party.”
