Trailblazer and suffragette Ethel Smyth was the first female composer to receive a damehood. Fearless and determined to break down barriers, her unbridled passion for travel is reflected in this playlist, along with the encounters and friendships she formed with leading composers of her day.

From Leipzig where Smyth met Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Clara Schumann and Grieg, to London and the Royal Albert Hall for the premiere of her Mass; from the Cornish coast for her opera The Wreckers to meetings with her colleagues Arthur Sullivan and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, eavesdrop on the rich and eclectic musical world of Ethel Smyth.
