India expels Canadian diplomat over Sikh activist death
Diplomatic row intensifies between India and Canada over the murder of a Canadian-Sikh activist in British Colombia.
India has expelled a senior Canadian diplomat. The foreign ministry in Delhi said its decision reflected what it called growing concern about the interference of Canadian diplomats in India's internal affairs. The statement came hours after Canada's foreign minister announced an Indian diplomat there was being expelled.
The escalating diplomatic row centres on Canadian claims that Indian government agents may have been involved in the murder, in June this year, of a Canadian Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in British Columbia. India has called the allegation absurd.
Mr Nijjar was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen in the busy car park of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, a city about 30km (18 miles) east of Vancouver.
India has previously described him as a terrorist who led a militant separatist group - accusations his supporters call "unfounded".
