Being a bridesmaid: ‘I bit my tongue way too long’

When Ruhama Wolle was a bridesmaid three times in quick succession, she resigned from all future bridesmaid requests.

She wrote an open letter to her family and friends explaining her decision, which has gone viral.

In Glamour Magazine, she wrote: “To my dear friends, cherished family, and maybe even future friends — consider the bouquet tossed. Spare me from future bridal party pleas. I adore you all, and I mean it when I say I’d do almost anything for you. But one more stint in a satin dress? That’s where I draw the line.”

Having spent over $4,000 on weddings and bridesmaid duties in the past 18 months, she told Woman’s Hour presenter Anita Rani about the mixed reaction to her decision, and why there needs to be a larger conversation about the pressures on bridesmaids.

You can listen to the full interview on ý Sounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 20 October.

Did you enjoy being a bridesmaid? Or was it a whole load of hassle?
