First Gay Games in Asia

Co-president of the Federation of Gay Games says the international event is 鈥渁 real milestone鈥.

Hong Kong is set to co-host the first Gay Games in Asia with over 2,300 participants from 45 countries expected to take part.

Athletes will compete in a range of games, including football and badminton, as well as Hong Kong dragon boat racing.

The first Gay Games were held in San Francisco in 1982. They have previously been held in Vancouver, New York, Sydney and several other cities in North America and Europe. Hong Kong is co-hosting this year鈥檚 event with the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

Joanie Evans is co-president of the Federation of Gay Games. She told Newsday: 鈥淲e鈥檙e not a political organisation. We鈥檙e not here to influence anybody. The only thing that we鈥檙e here (for) is to bring our event to the LGBTQ-plus community that are here, that may not get the chance to attend a Gay Games鈥f someone can鈥檛 come to us, we will go to them so that鈥檚 why we鈥檙e here鈥t鈥檚 a real milestone for us.鈥
