The Melissa Caddick mystery: ‘Had she cut off her own foot? Had she staged her murder?’

Why the story of a fraudster who stole from friends & family is fascinating Australia.

A woman called Melissa Caddick disappeared three years ago having stolen an estimated nearly £16m from clients, including her family and friends, over a period of eight years.

She is sometimes referred to as the Australian Bernie Madoff. Melissa also ran a Ponzi scheme, on a much smaller scale but still as devastating for those whose money she took.

Many of the investors, or her victims, continue to fight to get some of their money back, and have now launched a class action against the auditors who they feel were not keeping a close enough eye on their money.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour presenter Emma Barnett spoke to Kate McClymont, chief investigative reporter at the Sydney Morning Herald, who has followed this story for years, including presenting a podcast called Liar Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions. Emma asked Kate why this story has caused such fascination in Australia.

You can listen to the full interview on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 6 November.
