Council budgets: what does it mean for me in 2024?

While you're working out how much to spend or how you can afford Christmas this year, our local councils are mapping out how they are going to afford to run services from April next year.

And we've already heard it's going to be a very difficult job for our city and county councils.

Leicestershire County Council says it is facing its 'toughest ever budget', estimating an 拢85m shortfall by 2028. Council tax will increase by 5% next year as a result - the highest possible amount for county residents.

The mayor of Leicester has said the city council is looking at effective bankruptcy within the next 18 months. Sir Peter Soulsby said the council was facing 'severe budgetary problems'.
