Brussels sprouts: How your genes control whether you like them or hate them

Did you know our genes could play a part in whether we find Brussels sprouts bitter or not?

Sprouts are very much a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ vegetable and this is all down to whether our taste receptors can identify their bitterness.

Around 30% of the population can't taste the bitterness, meaning they’re potentially more likely to enjoy these cruciferous vegetables.

Dr Rachel Wells put Anita Rani’s taste receptors to the test on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour - watch the video to find out whether she can taste the bitterness.

Whether you love them or hate them, you can listen to the full special programme all about Brussels sprouts on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sounds – it's the Woman’s Hour episode from 25 December.
