Liverpool’s £1 Houses – Did they work?
Back in 2013, Liverpool City Council unveiled plans to sell off vacant houses for £1 each to help "drive up the quality of housing". 10 years on, has the scheme been successful?
If you think of what you could buy for £1, a house is not something that immediately comes to mind. But that was the reality for some residents in the Webster Triangle area of Liverpool, who signed up to the council's pilot 'Homes for a Pound' scheme.
So what's the catch? The owners had to refurbish the house they bought, and stay there for at least five years. Due to the poor condition the properties had been left in, many homeowners spent tens of thousands of pounds bringing them back to life.
Now, in this episode of 5 Minutes On, our North of England reporter - Rowan Bridge - has gone back to the Webster Triangle, to hear whether the scheme has been a success, ten years on since it was launched.
