'The Post Office destroyed our lives'

Leicestershire postmaster lost his job and union position in Post Office I.T. scandal.

One of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British legal history is currently being dramatised on ITV this week.

'Mr Bates vs The Post Office' is based on the real-life story of postmaster Alan Bates (Toby Jones) who drove the campaign to expose the Post Office Horizon I.T. scandal.

Hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to the defective I.T. system. From a total of 736, many were jailed, bankrupted and suffered appalling stress and public shame. The four-part mini-series focuses on the epic legal battle Bates led and won, paving the way for dozens of convictions to be overturned.

68 year old Susan Rudkin from Leicestershire was wrongly convicted of stealing money - while her husband 66 year old Michael lost his job and union position. The family had to turn their Ibstock home into a bed and breakfast for a source of income. Their story is featured in the ITV drama.

Michael Rudkin has been telling 大象传媒 Radio Leicester's Ben Jackson about their ordeal, and 'Mr Bates vs The Post Office' Director James Strong and Writer Gwyneth Hughes explain why they wanted to tell this important story.
