Myttin da! It鈥檚 time now for An Nowodhow, the news in Cornish, read for you this week by Steve Penhaligon.

Our first story is about the first ever successful moon landing by a commercial spacecraft which was built and launched by the American company Intuitive Machine.

Goonhilly Earth Station helped out during the mission by tracking and communicating with the spacecraft, called Odysseus, and it received the signal which confirmed that it had landed safely near the Moon鈥檚 south pole.

There are quite a lot of technical words in the story but some good ones to listen out for are 鈥榣oor鈥� which means 鈥榤oon鈥�, and 鈥榮terlester鈥� which is the Cornish word for a spaceship. Literally, a 鈥榮tarship鈥� 鈥� shades of Captain Kirk!

Good morning. Goonhilly Earth Station has taken part in the first commercial mission to land a spaceship on the Moon.

The spaceship was launched by the American company Intuitive Machine, and it made a successful landing near the Moon鈥檚 south pole a few days ago.

The Goonhilly base tracked the spaceship, named Odysseus, for Intuitive Machine and communicated with it throughout its voyage, before receiving the signal to confirm that it had landed safely.

As the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Catherine Heymans, said, "It was the Goonhilly Earth Station radio telescope in Cornwall that was searching and scanning for the signal from Odysseus. It was great to see the UK playing a big part in this space mission to the moon鈥�.

And a spokesman for Goonhilly Earth Station, Ian Jones, added that they were thrilled that they would be able to support the exploration of the Moon and deep space in future.

Our next story is about delays to the opening of the new section of the A30 between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross.

The road was supposed to open at the end of March this year but this has now been pushed back to June at the earliest.

The project director said that the main reason for the delays were the pandemic and recent bad weather. The road should still be open in time for the school holidays this summer though.

Here are couple of road related words! The word for road is 鈥榝ordh鈥� and a dual carriageway is a 鈥榙iwfordh鈥�, literally, 鈥榯wo roads鈥�.

The opening of the new section of the A30 between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross has been delayed.

Work began on the new dual carriageway in 2020 and, according to the original plan, it was anticipated that it would be open by the end of March this year.

However, project director Nick Simmonds-Screech, recently announced that the road would not be open before June and added that the delay was the result of two things: the pandemic and bad weather.

He explained that it had been extremely difficult to begin the project during the pandemic, on top of which, Cornwall had been hit by ten major storms since last August.

Nevertheless, he said that the dual carriageway would be open by the beginning of the school holidays, adding that the new road would 鈥渕ake a significant and positive difference鈥� to journeys through Cornwall.

They were shown round the site by engineering consultants Arcadis who wanted to emphasise the importance of sustainability in construction and how the students could contribute to it themselves in future.

You might hear the words 鈥楲en an Gath鈥� which is the Cornish name for Langarth. The name can be traced back as far as 1365 and its literal meaning is 鈥楾he Cat鈥檚 Strip of Land鈥�. The mind boggles.

Thirty students have visited Langarth Garden Village to learn more about this new development.

The students came from Truro and Penwith College where they are studying bricklaying and carpentry.

More than 3,600 houses will be built at Langarth over the next 25 years, as well as a primary school, parks and open spaces.

Engineering consultants Arcadis showed the students geothermal heating, a tree nursery and ponds to prevent flooding.

Charles Hill, from Arcadis, said: "We wanted to show the students how a project of this scale comes to life and how they can contribute to it in the future.

"We also wanted to emphasise the importance of sustainability in construction, as the garden village is committed to creating a low-carbon community."
