When will Senegal hold elections?

According to an analyst a March election could be possible after the Constitutional Council ruled the decision to delay the presidential election until December was 鈥渦nlawful鈥.

Senegal鈥檚 Constitutional Council has ruled the decision to postpone February's elections in Senegal until December is against the constitution.

The council also overturned a bill extending President Macky Sall's mandate.

Opposition politicians are now calling for a presidential election to be held as soon as possible following the ruling.

The unpopular delay prompted violent protests which killed three people and led to dozens of arrests.

The government has yet to respond to the ruling.

Gilles Yabi is founder of WATHI, the West Africa Citizen Think Tank. He told Newsday: 鈥淚t is clear that it is now impossible to hold the election on the 25 February as initially planned鈥 if a decision is taken quickly and electoral campaigns can start, then there is the possibility to hold the election, for example, in early March.鈥
