How to perform CPR on a child
Dr. Ranj shows us some of the key things to remember when performing CPR on a child (over the age of 1):
1) Check it is safe to approach.
2) Check for a response – if none, shout for help.
3) Check for normal breathing and signs of life – if none, call 999 and ask someone to get the nearest AED.
4) Give 5 rescue breaths.
5) If no change – start chest compressions.
6) Give 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
7) Keep alternating 30 compressions and 2 breaths until: the person recovers, expert help arrives and takes over, you become exhausted, or a defibrillator arrives (attach it and follow the instructions).
If you don’t remember the differences for a child, or are not confident/trained, then you can use the standard adult CPR sequence on anyone.
The process is slightly different in a child under 1 (see St John's Ambulance info on the Morning Live website for more information).
