Deaf Awareness Week - tip 2 for the hearing world

Deaf Academy teacher Nikki James shares a tip for the hearing world - use your face

Tip number two. So how do we engage with deaf people? Obviously hearing people, you use your voice to engage with people and you have intonation in your voice. Deaf people, well, they find it hard communicating with hearing people because they can't really understand what you're feeling because they can't hear your intonation. Sometimes it's hard to know if you're feeling happy or angry and that's why facial expressions are so important for us. It gives us your tone of voice. When you're angry, your eyebrows come down and your brow furrows, and we can see that you're angry. And when you're happy, you smile and your face lightens. So it's really important. We literally cannot have a conversation without any facial expressions. I know British people like to keep very straight faces and be very reserved, but you can change that. And you need to change that for us. When you see deaf people, you see they all look very, very young. And that's because they use loads of facial expression and it exercises all the muscles in their face and keeps them looking young. Hearing people use their voice, they've got lots of muscles, well, we've got lots of face muscles in our face. Hearing people have lots of neck muscles in their neck from speaking. It's a rich language for us.
