D-Day: Invading Normandy in 'flying coffins'

D-Day is best known for the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, but many glider-borne troops also took part in the opening phase of the invasion.

Among them was John Arthur from Lincolnshire, a machine gunner with the 2nd Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

They were part of the 6th Airborne Division, whose role on D-Day was to land behind enemy lines in wooden Horsa gliders and secure bridges and other strategic targets in Normandy for the Allied advance.
