Assaults on police officers treble in 5 years
The number of reported assaults on police officers in Leicestershire has trebled in the past five years.
Police data has revealed 971 incidents of assault were reported by officers on duty last year compared with 362 in 2018. The Police Federation says more needs to be done to protect officers who are out serving the public.
The Ministry of Justice says the police, crime, sentencing and courts act was amended two years ago to provide the maximum sentence of two years for common assault against an emergency worker.
PC Niamh Harrimon was attacked and injured by a woman she was trying to arrest earlier this year, and PC Mohammed Ahmed was attacked in Leicester last year - they've been speaking with 大象传媒 Leicester's Conor O'Grady.
